“Law, Governance and Politics”
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Minna Branch, also known as the “Power Bar,” has unveiled the theme for her 2026 Law Week, with a focus on the role of the legal profession in strengthening the rule of law within Nigeria’s democratic system.
The unveiling ceremony took place in Minna, the capital of Niger State, where members of the Bar and stakeholders gathered to mark the official announcement. The Law Week is scheduled to hold from June 5 to June 10, 2026.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Law Week Planning Committee, Mohammed Waziri Abdul Kadir, who is also the immediate past Chairman of the Branch, described the annual Law Week as more than a ceremonial gathering. He said it serves as a platform for reflection, engagement, and purposeful action within the legal profession.
Abdul Kadir explained that the theme was carefully selected in response to the growing need to critically examine the interplay between law, governance, and politics, especially within Nigeria’s evolving democratic landscape.
“This theme is timely, compelling, and unapologetically bold. It recognises that the law does not operate in a vacuum. It exists within the currents of governance and the realities of politics, and it is precisely at this intersection that the legal profession’s impact is most needed,” he stated.
He further noted that tensions often arise in democratic systems when political interests challenge institutional boundaries, or when governance is not firmly anchored on legal principles. In such situations, he stressed, the legal profession must play an active role in strengthening institutions and safeguarding the rule of law.
According to him, the 2026 Law Week has been intentionally designed to go beyond routine activities. He said the programme will feature critical discourse, practical insights, and solution-driven engagements aimed at addressing contemporary challenges in law and governance.
During an interactive session with journalists, members of the planning committee disclosed that the event would include a series of technical sessions and engagements with distinguished speakers drawn from diverse sectors. These sessions, they said, are structured to promote robust discussions and generate practical solutions.
The committee also assured that the forthcoming Law Week would depart from conventional formats, promising a well-organised, intellectually stimulating, and impactful conference.
The theme for the 2026 Law Week is: “Law, Governance and Politics: The Role of the Legal Profession in Advancing the Rule of Law in Nigeria’s Democracy.”
