Man, 48, arrested for dumping refuse on Lagos road

The Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources on Wednesday destroyed shanties and makeshift structures along Akin Ogunlewe Street in the Victoria Island area of the state.

On Wednesday from a statement shared on X by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, that the operation was aimed at ridding the area of criminals.

Wahab noted that the shanties and makeshift structures had been converted into hideouts and now posed a risk to the community.

He wrote, “Earlier today, we carried out the clearing of shanties and criminal hideouts along Akin Ogunlewe Street in Victoria Island.

“These illegal structures had been converted into shelters and hideouts that posed security and environmental risks to the surrounding community.

“Their removal was necessary to restore order, improve sanitation and ensure that public spaces are not turned into unsafe settlements.”

The commissioner stated that the state would continue to monitor and sustain its enforcement to ensure that the illegal squatters did not return.

The Lagos State Government has continually carried out the demolition of shanties and makeshift structures located across the state.Reported on October 31, 2025, that operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority uncovered a fake gun suspected to be used in terrorising residents during a shanty demolition exercise in the Costain area of the state.

Our correspondent, who monitored the demolition exercise, observed that the wooden shanties were erected behind the bus stop shed, along the setback on the railway track and under the bridge within the area.
