NLS confirms death of Lagos Law School student who fell from hostel fooftop

The Nigerian Law School (NLS) has confirmed the death of

a student who fell from the rooftop of a hostel at its Lagos Campus.The deceased student, who was enrolled at the Enugu Campus, was in Lagos to participate in the institution’s externship programme and had been temporarily accommodated at the Lagos Campus hostel.

In a statement issued on Monday, August 10, 2026, the Secretary to the Council and Director of Administration, Aderonke Osho, said the incident occurred at about 4:00 a.m. on Friday, August 7.

“Preliminary information indicates that, at about 4:00am on Friday, 7 August 2026, the student fell from the rooftop of the hostel at the Campus and, sadly, succumbed to the incident,” the statement said.

The institution did not disclose the student’s identity or provide details on what led to the fall.

According to the statement, the management is working with relevant authorities and the deceased student’s family to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that all necessary procedures are followed.

“The Management is working closely with the appropriate authorities and the family to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, ensure that all necessary procedures are duly followed, and provide further information as appropriate,” Osho said.

The Nigerian Law School expressed condolences to the deceased’s family, colleagues and others affected by the death.

The institution also appealed to members of the public and the media to respect the family’s privacy and allow them to grieve without actions or reports that could further deepen their pain.

The school reaffirmed its commitment to the safety, welfare and wellbeing of its students and staff.

The confirmation came after earlier reports that the Lagos State Police Command had commenced an investigation into the incident. The police account reportedly indicated a suspected case of suicide after a note was allegedly found at the scene.

However, the Nigerian Law School did not characterize the death as suicide in its official statement, describing the incident only as a fall from the hostel rooftop.

The circumstances surrounding the student’s death therefore remain under investigation.
