Residents of Lonex Gardens Estate in Isheri North, Ogun State, have called on relevant authorities to urgently intervene in the operation of a gas plant within the estate.

The residents, under the aegis of the Residents’ Association of Lonex Gardens Estate (RALGIN), expressed concerns over safety and urged regulators to review the approval and location of the facility.

The association urged the Nigeria Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), the Nigeria Police Force and the Ogun State Government to examine the situation and take necessary steps to safeguard lives and property.

The residents said their concerns were heightened by past gas explosion incidents in parts of Lagos and neighbouring communities, including the 2020 accident at Otedola Bridge and the 2021 explosion in Abule-Ado, which led to casualties and property loss.

According to the association, residents were initially informed that the site would be developed for commercial use but later observed that a gas facility was being constructed there, raising safety concerns within the community.

The association added that issues relating to regulatory approvals, environmental assessments and the suitability of the location for such a facility should be clarified by the appropriate authorities.

Chairman of RALGIN, Mr Jide Fasanmi, said residents were not opposed to lawful commercial activities but were seeking assurance that all regulatory and safety requirements had been met.

“Our members are concerned about safety and the need for proper regulatory oversight. We are appealing to the authorities to look into the matter and ensure that the wellbeing of residents is protected,” he said.

The association also urged that any subsisting court processes relating to the project be respected and handled in accordance with the law.

It further called on the Ogun State Government and relevant agencies to engage with the community and provide clarity on the status of the facility and the measures in place to ensure safety within the estate.

According to the residents, their appeal is intended to draw attention to their concerns and encourage dialogue among stakeholders, including regulators, government officials and the operators of the facility.

They stressed that the safety of residents and adherence to due process should remain paramount in the siting and operation of facilities within residential areas.

The association therefore appealed to government authorities to review the situation and take appropriate steps in the interest of public safety.
