FCCPC’s digital lending victory: A regulatory milestone, not the end of the story

Lagos Zonal Office of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC, has resolved about 15,000 consumer complaints received through its online and physical channels within the zone.

The Zonal Coordinator of the commission, Dr Olubunmi Otti, disclosed this during an interactive session with journalists at the FCCPC office in Ikeja.

Otti explained that consumers could submit complaints through the commission’s official website or visit its Lagos Corporate Office to seek redress when they are dissatisfied with products or services.

She noted that consumers have a legitimate expectation of receiving value whenever they pay for goods or services, adding that those whose expectations are not met have the right to seek assistance from the FCCPC.

According to her, consumers are expected to first raise their complaints directly with the relevant service provider and seek a resolution before approaching the commission.

Where the matter remains unresolved, she said consumers can file complaints through the FCCPC’s online portal or submit them personally at its Lagos office.

Otti said complainants must provide sufficient information to enable the commission to investigate their cases effectively.

She listed the required details to include the service provider’s address and location, receipts or other evidence of payment, the amount involved and the specific form of redress being sought.

The zonal coordinator disclosed that the Lagos office had received approximately 17,000 complaints through its online portal and at its office, out of which about 15,000 cases had been successfully resolved.

She said the commission’s intervention was primarily aimed at protecting consumers’ interests, promoting fair business practices and ensuring that members of the public receive appropriate value for goods and services purchased.
