Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has strongly condemned the abduction of Justice Faruku Hassan Bunza of the Kebbi State High Court, describing the incident as a grave attack on the judiciary, the rule of law, and the administration of justice.
Justice Bunza was reportedly kidnapped from his residence in Bunza Local Government Area of Kebbi State by suspected armed bandits.
In a statement issued by the NBA President, Afam Osigwe (SAN), the association called for the judge’s immediate and unconditional release, urging security agencies to deploy every available resource to ensure his safe rescue.
Osigwe said the abduction of a serving judicial officer poses a serious threat to the independence of the judiciary and could weaken public confidence in Nigeria’s justice system.
He urged the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), the National Security Adviser, and other relevant security agencies to intensify efforts to secure Justice Bunza’s release and bring those responsible for the crime to justice.
“The abduction of Honourable Justice Faruku Hassan Bunza from his residence by suspected armed bandits is not only an attack on his person but also a direct assault on the Nigerian judiciary, the administration of justice, and the rule of law,” the statement said.
The association also expressed concern over what it described as the increasing boldness of criminal groups targeting institutions and officials responsible for upholding justice, warning that such attacks could erode public trust in the country’s legal system.
The NBA further called on the Kebbi State Government to work closely with federal security agencies to ensure the judge is rescued unharmed while those behind the abduction are identified, arrested, and prosecuted.
It also stressed the need for stronger security measures for judicial officers across the country, noting that judges must be adequately protected to perform their constitutional duties without fear, intimidation, or threats to their safety.
The association concluded by offering prayers and support to Justice Bunza, his family, colleagues, and the Kebbi State judiciary, expressing hope for his safe and swift return.
