Sanctity of human life must never be compromised – Akangbe

Condemns killing of Mene Ogidi, demands accountability, police reforms

I express my profound shock and deep sadness over the tragic and unfortunate killing of Mr. Mene Ogidi, who was fatally shot on 26th April 2026 in Effurun, Delta State. This incident is deeply regrettable and once again highlights the critical importance of strict compliance with the rule of law by all security operatives.

I commend the Inspector-General of Police for the swift and decisive response taken immediately after the incident, including the withdrawal of all officers involved, the commencement of expedited disciplinary proceedings, and the thorough investigation conducted through the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC).

While these steps are welcome, the gravity of this incident remains deeply concerning. The sanctity of human life is fundamental and must never be compromised. The use of lethal force must at all times remain strictly within the bounds of law, necessity, and proportionality. Any deviation from this standard is unacceptable in a democratic society governed by the rule of law.

It is imperative that justice in this matter is not only pursued through disciplinary measures but is also seen to be transparent, thorough, and complete, so as to reinforce public confidence in our security and justice institutions.

This unfortunate incident further underscores the urgent need for continued reforms within our policing system, including strengthened training on rules of engagement, enhanced accountability mechanisms, and a zero-tolerance approach to abuse of power.

I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Mene Ogidi, and pray that they find strength and comfort in this painful moment.

We must collectively remain steadfast in our demand for a Nigeria where the rule of law is not merely professed, but consistently upheld in practice.
