Hon. Justice Faruku Hassan Bunza, a High Court judge in Kebbi State who was abducted by suspected bandits last week, has regained his freedom and returned home safely after spending seven days in captivity.
A family member confirmed the judge’s release on Monday, disclosing that he arrived home only a few hours before the announcement. The family expressed joy and gratitude over his safe return, describing the development as a moment of celebration.
“We are in jubilation and full of gratitude to God for seeing our own return safely from captivity. He was just released and has returned home now after spending one week with the bandits,” the family member said.
Justice Bunza’s abduction sparked widespread concern across Kebbi State, prompting members of the judiciary, legal practitioners, residents, and other well-wishers to call for his unconditional release.
The family also thanked the Kebbi State Judiciary, security agencies, and residents of the state for their prayers, support, and solidarity throughout the period of his captivity.
“We sincerely thank and appreciate the Kebbi State Judiciary, the security agencies, and the entire people of Kebbi State who contributed in different ways, offered prayers, and sent messages of sympathy. Your concern and support gave us strength, and we are grateful for your solidarity,” the family member added.
Although the family confirmed that the judge had regained his freedom, they declined to disclose the circumstances surrounding his release, stating that further details would be made public at a later time.
“Other details of how he was released will be made available later,” the source said.
As of the time of this report, it remained unclear whether any ransom was paid or whether security operatives played a role in securing the judge’s release.
