Former Super Eagles striker Michael Eneramo has died after collapsing during a friendly football match in Kaduna State on Friday.
The 39-year-old reportedly slumped in Ungwan Yelwa after playing the entire first half of the game. Early reports suggest he may have suffered cardiac arrest about five minutes into the second half.
His death was confirmed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). The federation’s General Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi, described the news as shocking and deeply painful, extending condolences to his family and the Nigerian football community.
Born on November 26, 1985, in Kaduna, Eneramo had a notable football career at both club and international levels. He earned 10 caps for Nigeria after previously declining an invitation to play for Tunisia.
He made his Super Eagles debut in a friendly against Jamaica in 2009 and scored his first international goal later that year against the Republic of Ireland. He was also part of Nigeria’s 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign.
At club level, Eneramo was widely respected for his time with Esperance of Tunisia, where he became a fan favourite and earned the nickname “The Tank.” He also played in Turkey for clubs including Besiktas, Sivasspor, and Istanbul Basaksehir.
