An 87-year-old man, Dahiru Garba, has been arraigned in Adamawa State for allegedly severing the hand of a judge with a cutlass during court proceedings.
Garba, a resident of Korawa village in Fufore Local Government Area, allegedly attacked the presiding judge of the Mayo-Inne Area Court, Dauda Hamman, during a fit of rage.
The incident reportedly occurred on Monday, August 31, while Justice Hamman was presiding over a case involving Garba and another man, Ismail Yusuf.
According to the Adamawa State Police Command, Garba allegedly attacked the judge with a cutlass, repeatedly striking his hand and inflicting grievous injuries.
The police said Garba was arrested immediately after the incident and was initially taken to the Divisional Police Headquarters in Fufore. The case was later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Yola on September 4 for further investigation and prosecution.
In a statement issued on Tuesday morning, the command’s spokesperson, SP Suleiman Nguroje, said the investigation was completed and Garba was arraigned on Monday, September 7, before Chief Magistrate Court I, Yola.
Nguroje said the suspect is facing a one-count charge of causing grievous hurt, contrary to Section 219 of the Penal Code Law of Adamawa State, 2018.
According to the police spokesperson, the charge was read and interpreted to Garba, after which he pleaded guilty and blamed the devil for his actions.
The court subsequently ordered that Garba be remanded at the Yola Correctional Facility pending further hearing.
The police said ASP Zakka Musa is prosecuting the case on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Kabir Umar Hassan.
