The Kwara State Government has donated multi-million naira worth of essential materials to the Nigeria Correctional Service, Kwara State Command, to support the rehabilitation and welfare of inmates.
The development was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Press Secretary to the Secretary to the State Government, Murtala Atoyebi, a copy of which was made available to newsmen in Ilorin.
The items, including computer sets, vocational training materials, mattresses and toiletries, were presented to the command at its headquarters in Ilorin on behalf of the Secretary to the State Government.
The Permanent Secretary, General Services, Abdulganiyu Yitta, who represented the SSG, said the intervention was aimed at supporting the Correctional Service to effectively carry out its mandate.
Yitta said the state government recognised the enormous responsibility of the service in addressing social misconduct and helping to reform inmates, particularly young persons.
He said, “The administration of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq recognises the service and the critical role it is playing in transforming the state into a socially responsible society.”
According to him, the government considered it necessary to provide the command with the needed materials to enhance its operations and support the rehabilitation of inmates.
Yitta added that the donation was part of the AbdulRazaq administration’s continued support for the Nigeria Correctional Service in the state.
“The state government has, over the years, extended assistance and support to the command on several occasions, reflecting the importance it attaches to the service and its mandate,” he said.
The Permanent Secretary commended the management and officers of the command for their dedication to duty, urging them to ensure the judicious use of the donated items.
He also assured the command of the state government’s continued support in its efforts to reform inmates and contribute to the development of a safer society.
Receiving the materials, the Kwara State Controller of Corrections, Mr Femi Tolorunlagba, commended the state government for responding promptly to the command’s request.
Tolorunlagba said the donation would go a long way in reducing some of the challenges faced by inmates in the command.
“This kind gesture will go a long way in relieving the burden experienced by the inmates,” he noted.
Meanwhile, the Controller also pledged the continued support and cooperation of the command with the state government towards promoting public safety and building a crime-free society.
