Hon Justice Mohammed Nasir Yunusa of the Federal High Court, Kano Division, has died.

The Federal High Court of Nigeria confirmed his death in a statement issued by its Director of Information, Dr. Catherine Oby Christopher.

According to the statement, Justice Yunusa died on May 21, 2026, at the State Medical Centre in Kano after a brief illness.

He was subsequently buried in accordance with Islamic rites.

The court described the late judge as a distinguished judicial officer who served the Bench with dedication, integrity and firm commitment to the administration of justice.

“The Chief Judge, Judges, Management, and Staff of the Federal High Court extend their heartfelt condolences to his immediate family and pray that Almighty God grants them the strength and fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” the statement read.

The court also prayed for Almighty Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.

Justice Yunusa served on the Federal High Court bench in Kano, where he handled several notable cases, including matters arising from the 2023 general elections.

Among the cases linked to his court was a suit challenging the electoral victories of Labour Party candidates across several states.

Following reports at the time, the Federal High Court in Kano clarified that it did not nullify the candidature of Abia State Governor, Alex Otti.

In one of the rulings connected to the matter, Justice Yunusa held that candidates who participated in the Abia elections were not parties before his court.

“This court lacks jurisdiction to make an order for the issuance of certificate of return. They are at liberty to seek redress in the appropriate Division of the court,” he had ruled.

The suit was filed by Ibrahim Haruna-Ibrahim, who had asked the court to revoke certificates of return issued to Labour Party candidates declared winners in Kano and other states, including the Federal Capital Territory.

The Labour Party and the Independent National Electoral Commission were listed as respondents in the case.

Justice Yunusa’s death has been described as a great loss to the Federal High Court, the Nigerian judiciary and the legal community.
