The Rivers State Police Command has begun disciplinary action against Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ekawhe Thomas over alleged negligence that reportedly led to the escape of a suspect in his custody.
In a statement posted on the Command’s official social media page on Saturday, authorities confirmed that ASP Ekawhe Thomas (Service No. AP/No. 196838), attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Rivers State, has been detained and issued a formal query in line with the disciplinary procedures of the Nigeria Police Force.
The action follows media reports concerning the escape of a detained suspect, which raised concerns about possible security lapses within the facility.
The statement was signed by ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, the Police Public Relations Officer, on behalf of the Rivers State Commissioner of Police.
“The Command is aware of a publication currently circulating in the media concerning the alleged conduct of a police officer attached to SCID Rivers State Police Command over the escape of a suspect,” the statement said.
The Command further assured the public that a thorough investigation is ongoing, adding that efforts are being made to re-arrest the fleeing suspect. It emphasized that the probe will continue until justice is achieved.
Reacting to the development, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, expressed strong displeasure over the incident, describing it as unacceptable.
“I am deeply displeased by this incident,” he said, reaffirming that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to professionalism, discipline, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law.
He added that any officer found culpable after investigations would face appropriate disciplinary measures in line with existing regulations, stressing that negligence and misconduct would not be tolerated.
The Command also reassured the public of its commitment to transparency, justice, and the protection of citizens’ rights, while urging residents to remain calm and supportive as efforts continue to restore public confidence.
Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
