A 400-level medical student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, Adewole Emmanuel, has died after collapsing shortly before he was due to sit for his final session examination.

The incident, which has thrown the university community into mourning, was confirmed on Thursday, April 22, 2026, by the Ife University Medical Students Association (IFUMSA).

In a statement, the association described Emmanuel as a bright and dedicated student whose sudden death has left classmates and colleagues in deep shock.

“Under the cover of dark clouds, we write to you with the heaviest of hearts to inform you of the passing of one of our own, an integral part of the association and a solid pillar of his class,” the statement read.

IFUMSA further described him as a colleague, friend, roommate, and Part 4 medical student with a promising future cut short by his untimely death.

The association said the loss was deeply painful, noting that Emmanuel was a valued member of the IFUMSA community.

“This incident is not only sad, but crucially painful as we lost a rising star and a loving member of the IFUMSA family,” it added.

It also urged the public to avoid speculation about the cause of death and to respect the privacy of the bereaved family.

“In honoring his dearest memories, we kindly ask the general public to refrain from speculations and respect the privacy of the family during this vulnerable period,” it said.

A senior member of the association, who spoke anonymously, said Emmanuel showed no prior signs of illness before the incident.

“He died yesterday. He hadn’t been sick. He just collapsed and couldn’t be resuscitated,” the source said.

“He was with us at the college waiting for our final exam when he suddenly collapsed. It is very unfortunate, especially as he had no known underlying condition. We have already contacted his family.”
