Hon Jurists and other participants at the recently concluded African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA) conference in the Republic of Benin.

Renowned lawyer, Prof Yusuf Olaolu Ali (SAN), has pledged to support infrastructure development at the Yakubu Gowon University YGU), Abuja, formerly the University of Abuja, following his conferment with an honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD) degree.

Ali made the commitment at the institution’s combined 29th and 30th convocation ceremony held in Abuja, where he was recognised for his contributions to the legal profession and national development.

He assured the university community that he would contribute to addressing key infrastructural challenges within the next two years, stressing the need for sustained investment in facilities to match the institution’s growing population.

The senior advocate also charged graduating students to remain focused, resilient and committed to excellence as they step into the next phase of their lives.

The honorary degree was approved by the university’s Governing Council at its 83rd extraordinary meeting.

Born on September 7, 1956, Ali was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1983 and later elevated to the rank of SAN.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Hakeem Fawehinmi, disclosed that a total of 17,300 students graduated across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

He noted that the university is being repositioned through infrastructure expansion, staff development, and strategic partnerships aimed at improving academic standards and competitiveness.

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Abel Enitan, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the education sector through sustained investment, improved infrastructure, and enhanced staff welfare.
