Beyond the statutory mandate of contributing revenue to the consolidated funds, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has unveiled a six blocks of class rooms at Alhassan Primary School in Maigatari, Jigawa state.
The customs intervention which include reconstruction, rehabilitation of dilapidated classrooms, construction of solar borehold, and provisions of education materials to the pupils were part of its Corporate Social Responsibility CSO to external publics.Unveiling the facilities at the border town between Nigeria and Niger on Thursday, Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi explained the initiative was burned out of share compassion to impact on community where the service operate.
CG Adeniyi explained the initiative tagged “Customs Care” development around six pillars, includes education, healthcare, social investment, creative economy, food security, and environmental sustainability.
He said the Service has long been recognised as a statutory mandate of revenue generation and trade facilitation and security added the CSO which was initiated in 2025 intended to demonstrate communal responsibility.
According to him, “In any rapidly evolving landscape, we have come to appreciate that sustainable national development requires institutions to go beyond compliance and enforcement. It needs us to invest in our people.
“The Customs Care initiative was therefore established as a structured and accountable framework to channel our social interventions in strategic and measurable manner.
“The pillars reflects our conviction that strong communities form the bedrock of a secure and prosperous nation. Education occupies a special place within this pillar. It is the foundation upon which economic growth, social stability, and national cohesion are built”. Adeniyi explained.
Speaking further on the initiative, Customs Zonal coordinator, Zone ‘B’ ACG NP Umoh disclosed the CSR is strategically structured around the thematic priority areas.
She said the intervention is carefully aligned with the Presidential Renewed Hope Agenda, and principles of sustainable development goals, and the broader framework of global social solidarity.
The coordinator added that the intervention entails comprehensive platform renovations, the provision of an installation of desks, the construction of 16 units of ventilated improved pit latrines, a botanical garden, the installation of a solar-powered borehole to enhance water accessibility, hygiene standards, and overall public health condition within the school environment and the larger community.
“Additionally, over 1,800 units of educational materials including school bags, exercise books, pencils, pens, and rulers will be distributed to the pupils to strengthen their learning capacities and academic engagement”. Umoh added.
Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Jigawa state, Alh. Babangida Umar applause the customs for the contribution to educational development of Jigawa state.
The Commissioner pointed out the intervention will further complement the 12 point agenda of Governor Umar Namadi hinged largely on education and social economic well being of the people.
