Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun State.

Adeife, had publicly apologised after previously accusing her schoolmate, Adefesobi known simply as David on X, of being a rapist.

The apology follows a viral video in which Adefesobi denied the allegation and said the accusation began after he shared his opinion on WhatsApp about the trending Mirabel case.

He had explained that the disagreement escalated into online attacks, with Adeife tagging him as a rapist and circulating his content in group chats.

In a video, Adeife admitted that she falsely accused Adefesobi in the heat of the moment and allowed her emotions to take over.

She said, “Good afternoon, everyone. I’m making this video to apologise to David in regards to the post I made yesterday, calling him a rapist, and accusing him of being a rapist because of his post. It was the heat of the moment. I let my emotions take over me, and I accused him. So this is me apologising and clearing the air that he is not a rapist.

“He is never a rapist. I’ve never caught him raping anybody. So, I am sorry, David, I’m sorry for calling you a rapist, and this is just to clear the air. He is not a rapist. David is not a rapist.”

In the latest development, Anekwe & Associates, Barristers & Solicitors, the Solicitors to Adefesobi known on X as David also demanded a written apology and full retraction, to be published prominently on all platforms including all social media platforms and any other medium where the defamatory allegation was originally published.

He demanded immediate removal of all defamatory publications and any related content concerning from all platforms within her control and a written undertaking that she will cease and desist from making any further defamatory statements.

She was given 14 days from the date of receipt of the letter to comply fully with the demands.

The law firm stated that Adefesobi briefed the firm that on or about February 17, 2026, she falsely accused him of the criminal offence of rape and proceeded to publish his phone number alongside the said allegation on social media, including but not limited to WhatsApp.

Kingsley Anekwe who signed the demand described the allegation as malicious, reckless, and without any factual foundation.

He said that an allegation of rape constitutes a most serious criminal imputation and the publication exposed Adefesobi to public hatred, ridicule, contempt, and opprobrium, severely injuring his injuring his reputation, integrity, and standing among family members, fellow students, professional colleagues, associates, and the general public.

He said: “Following your publication, several persons privately contacted our client, directly referring to him as a rapist. Furthermore, as a direct consequence of the said allegation, our client lost certain business contracts and commercial opportunities. Your actions have also subjected our client to sustained online harassment, threats, emotional distress, and reputational injury extending beyond the initial publication.

The continued accessibility and circulation of the defamatory content, including screenshots, reposts, and third-party commentary, have aggravated the damage suffered.

“Although you subsequently issued an apology via a video recording, the damage occasioned by your defamatory publication remains substantial and continuing. The initial defamatory statement had already gained circulation and caused significant reputational and emotional harm before your retraction.

“The apology does not extinguish liability for the tort of defamation, nor does it automatically cure the injury occasioned by the widespread publication.

“Our client reserves the right to petition the appropriate law enforcement and regulatory authorities where necessary.
