Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) Nigeria has pledged to offer Ghana technical assistance and capacity building in the area of accident and incident probes.

The AIB-Ghana Commissioner, Akwesi Prempeh, who led a four-man team to the AIB-N headquarters in Abuja, had sought the technical support from Nigeria.

Prempeh said the objective of the visit was to acquire knowledge on key policies, regulations, procedures and the structure of the Nigerian bureau.

After the tour of the AIB-N facilities, including the safety laboratory, training centre, command and control centre and the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Prempeh told reporters that they were looking for ways to fund the bureau, being a new establishment.

He further disclosed plans by the Ghanaian government to bring some members of its workforce in the bureau to Nigeria for accident investigation training.

Commissioner of AIB-N, Akin Olateru, said the Ghanaian team was in Nigeria on a fact-finding mission, to learn from our mistakes and from the things we have done very well.

“They came to inspect our facilities and what we have done so far is to take them round to also inspect our equipment. They have met with a lot of our investigators and almost all the heads of units.

“They have gone through some of our documentations as well, such as our regulation and others. This is an attestation to the fact that we are doing something right in AIB-Nigeria. This is not the first nation to call on us for assistance. We’ve had such calls from the Republic of Benin, which has ceded all their investigation to AIB-Nigeria.”
