The Niger State Chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers, Christy Barau, has advocated the castration of convicted rapists to serve as deterrent to others. She made the proposal in an interview with Northern City News on Sunday after a sensitisation programme held in Minna.
According to her, such a punishment will go a long way to render perpetrators of such acts impotent in order to protect innocent boys and girls.
Barau said, “We cannot allow rapists to take over the state; they must be checked, otherwise innocent girls, especially underage ones will continue to be their victims. We are proposing a bill to be sent to the state House of Assembly to make castration a punishment to rapist in the state.
“FIDA is saddled with the responsibility of protecting the girl child and women, as well as the vulnerable in the society; we have vowed to fight perpetrators to a standstill so that it will serve as a deterrent to others, who may wish to continue with this evil act.”
She expressed concern over the growing cases of rape in Niger State, adding that it was heart rending that most of the victims were girls, who were as young as two-year-old.
“We are disturbed about the high rate of rape cases and other sexual violence against the girl child and women; we will sponsor a bill to curtail this menace,” Barau added.
She expressed regret that most of the suspected rapists were roaming the streets without facing the consequences of their actions.
The FIDA boss expressed confidence that cases of child molestation and sexual exploitation would be reduced to the barest minimum in the state when the bill becomes a law.
