Police boss orders arrest of Zamfara attack masterminds

The Inspector General of Police, IGP, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, has ordered the arrest of the perpetrators of the February 14, 2018 attack on Zurmi council area of Zamfara State. The incident led to the death more than 40 persons.

Suspected armed herdsmen had on the fateful day invaded Birani village in the council. The attack reportedly came when hunters from the settlement allegedly intercepted a herder with some cattle and sheep believed to have been stolen. It was learnt that the attackers remobilised and inflicted the pain on the village, leading to the death of scores.

Idris also directed the deployment of three additional units of the Police Mobile Force (PMF) in the affected areas, making it 10 so far deployed to assist the Zamfara command in maintaining law and order in parts of the state.

The Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Jimoh Moshood, in a statement at the weekend in Abuja, said the commissioners (CPs) and their Supervising Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs) as well as the personnel in the contiguous states to Zamfara had been placed on alert by the IGP, adding that they had also been directed to cooperate with the investigative team from the force headquarters.

Moshood, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), said the IGP had also ordered the Joint Special Investigation Team headed by the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Intelligence of the Force have proceeded to Zamfara State to commence a detailed investigation into the killings.

He noted that he would be assisted by officers of the Force Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department (FCIID), the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Special Tactical Squad (STS), Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU), crime experts as well as the state command’s Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department and relevant authorities in Zurmi council area.

He said: “The Joint Police Investigative Team is under a definite and strict mandate to arrest and bring to justice the perpetrators of the killings, investigate the incident in totality with a view to unravelling the remote and immediate causes of the unfortunate incident as well as preventing a re-occurrence.”
