NBA freed lawyer wrongfully detained for kidnapping in Imo

Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), under the leadership of Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has once again demonstrated its commitment to protecting the rights of legal practitioners and upholding justice. The NBA last week successfully secured the release of Lilian Oluchi Eze, a female lawyer practicing in Benin, who was unlawfully detained at the Tiger Base Unit, State CID, Owerri, Imo State.

Lilian had traveled to Owerri, Imo State, with the sole purpose of securing bail for her sister. However, in a shocking turn of events, she was wrongfully accused of kidnapping and detained by the police.

Upon learning of her detention, the NBA 1st Vice President and Chairman of the Human Rights Institute, Sabastine Anyia, Esq., immediately took action. He contacted NBA Owerri Branch Chairman, Chief Chris Ihentuge, along with key elders of the branch, and led a team to the Tiger Base Unit to demand her release.

Thanks to the swift intervention of the NBA leadership, the lawyer regained her freedom the same day, Wednesday, March 12, 2025.

Speaking on the incident, Mr. Anyia reaffirmed the NBA’s unwavering dedication to defending lawyers and upholding human rights, stating:

“Under the leadership of our proactive President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, we are not leaving any stone unturned. The Nigerian Bar Association remains committed to protecting the rights of lawyers and ensuring that no member of the profession suffers unjust treatment.”
