Police reckless shootings must stop, NBA Minna Branch calls for accountability

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Minna Branch, has condemned the alarming rate of reckless shootings and extrajudicial killings by police officers in Niger State. In a formal letter to the State Commissioner of Police, the NBA has called for immediate investigations and prosecutions of officers involved in these unlawful acts, as well as compensation for the victims’ families.

Signed by the NBA Minna Branch Chairman, Barr. Isyaku Barau, the letter described these killings as serious violations of fundamental human rights and an erosion of public trust in law enforcement. Barr. Barau cited recent incidents that have sparked outrage, including the killing of a Keke NAPEP rider, the fatal shooting of a female immigration officer near Obasanjo Shopping Complex, and the murder of a young professional footballer in Maitumbi, allegedly at the hands of a drunken police officer.

“These tragic events are part of a disturbing pattern of extrajudicial killings that cannot be ignored,” said Barr. Barau.

The NBA has called for immediate action, urging the police command to thoroughly investigate the incidents, prosecute the responsible officers, compensate the families of the victims, and introduce preventive measures, such as revising firearm handling protocols and conducting psychological evaluations of officers on duty.

The NBA Minna Branch has also warned that any attempt to cover up the actions of the officers involved will lead to strong legal action and public advocacy. They emphasized the need for police reform to restore public trust and ensure the safety of all citizens in Niger State.
