Malami: Power of public office is transient – Moghalu

Former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Kingsley Moghalu, has said the case of ex-Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has shown Nigerians taking public office that power is transient.

Moghalu said public office in Nigeria has now been uncoupled from competence, ideology, or values such as integrity.

Posting on X, the former CBN deputy governor said the court should decide if Malami is guilty or not.

Reacting to report linking Malami’s wealth to Sani Abacha’s loot, Paris Club refund, and the CBN agric loan, Moghalu wrote: “By now anyone taking public office in Nigeria should understand the transience of power, especially in a country where public office has progressively become uncoupled from competence, ideology, or values such as integrity.

“When people carry on in office like tomorrow will never arrive, the hunters will become the hunted. This is only a general statement and not a “conviction” of Mr. Malami.

“Let the courts decide his guilt or innocence, if they will, and if this does not become yet another alleged corruption case with no real conclusion.

“But it was a bit odd when the central bank increasingly became the “Central Bank of Agriculture” under the great central banking whiz kid Mr. Emefiele.”

This comes as Malami and his son, Abubakar Abdulaziz, were arraigned before the Abuja Federal High Court for money laundering on Tuesday.

Malami, Abdulaziz, and another individual pleaded not guilty to the 16-count charge of alleged money laundering.

They were arraigned on allegations of unlawful acquisition and concealment of funds.
