An official notice, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, GCON, directed the rescheduling of the Supreme Court of Nigeria’s sitting originally slated for November 13th to 17th, 2023.
This adjustment aims to allow Honourable Justices to attend the All Nigeria Judges’ Conference during the same period. The Supreme Court’s Registry will communicate the new dates to affected parties and their counsel in due course.
National Publicity Secretary of the NBA, Akorede Habeeb Lawal, issued the notice, providing essential information to members.
However, a legal practitioner expressed his discontent with the NBA’s approach, questioning the involvement of the NBA’s publicity secretary in Supreme Court matters. He emphasized the NBA’s responsibility to address the delay in the administration of justice and suggested a more proactive stance, urging the adoption of ICT innovations for case management.
In response, Habeeb Lawal acknowledged the frustration expressed by the lawyer, clarifying that the published notice serves a specific purpose of informing affected members about the schedule change. He highlighted the distinction between a notice and a statement, emphasizing that the NBA’s role is to share relevant information with its members.
This exchange reflects the ongoing discourse within the legal community concerning the balance between accommodating judges’ conferences and addressing systemic challenges in the administration of justice.
