The Nigerian Bar Association (Ikeja branch) is to lead an advocacy initiative on building collapse in Lagos State to proffer lasting solutions to curb incessant cases of the incident in the state.

The advocacy programme which is scheduled to hold on Wednesday 25 October 2023, at the Bar Centre, Lagos State High Court, Oba Akinjobi Way, Ikeja, themed, “Building Collapse and Application of Punitive Laws in Lagos State,” is organised in inconjuncture with the NBA Building Collapse Prevention Guild (BCPG).

“This advocacy programme has become necessary in the face of the incessant building collapse that has pervaded Lagos State,” Oluwaseyi Olawumi, chairman, NBA, Ikeja branch, said during the pre-event press conference held at the NBA secretariat in Ikeja on Tuesday 24 October 2023.

According to him, the advocacy will serve as a platform for open, informed, and collective discussions on how to make buildings safer and the Lagos communities more resilient.

He said further that the incessant collapse of buildings across the state necessitates the urgent need for the advocacy programme.

According to him, the frequency of building collapses in Lagos is deeply troubling, resulting in the loss of lives, properties, and economic resources.

“This has left an indelible mark on the community, and it is high time that we come together to find solutions and enforce stringent punitive laws that will deter negligent building practices,” Olawumi said.

He also disclosed that Femi Falana, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) will deliver the keynote address alongside other speakers and a panel of experts.

“Moreover, a panel of respected experts, including Olawale Banmore, Gbolahan Oki, Ayuba Akere, Bamidele Onalaja, and other seasoned professionals, will share their knowledge and experiences to propose effective strategies for enhancing building safety in Lagos State,” he said
