Man, 30, charged with alleged trafficking in hemp

National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on Friday charged a 30-year-old man, Ahmed Ojonugwa, before a Federal High Court in Lagos over alleged drug trafficking.

The defendant, whose home address was not provided, was charged on a two-count bordering on illegal dealings in cannabis and methamphetamine.

NDLEA prosecutor, Lambert Nor, said that the defendant committed the offence on December 6, 2022, at Idi-Oro, Mushin area of Lagos State.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that Nor alleged that the defendant illegally dealt in 11kg of cannabis and 23g of methamphetamine.

According to the prosecution, both drugs are similar to psychotropic substances such as cocaine, and heroin, and are categorised as restricted narcotics prohibited by the NDLEA Act.

Nor said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 11(c) of the NDLEA Act, Caps N30, Law of the Federation, 2004. The Act provides a penalty of life imprisonment if convicted.
