Fake land agent arraigned over alleged N11m fraud

A 43-year-old land agent, Ijeoma Akingboye, has been arraigned before the Ogba Magistrates’ Court sitting at Ogba, Lagos State, for allegedly defrauding a customer of the sum of N11m over the sale of land.

During the arraignment before Chief Magistrate L. A. Owolabi, it was alleged that Akingboye, alongside her fleeing accomplices, were parading themselves as land agents to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.

An unsuspecting buyer, Tony lloabuchi, was said to have fallen prey to the disguise of the agents as he approached them for the purchase of land.

The state prosecutor, Josephine Ikhayere, said Akingboye and her accomplices promised to secure two plots of land for lloabuchi and his colleague, Ejike Ogbodo, for the sum of N11m in January 2021.

It was learnt that the agents refused to deliver the plots of land as promised.

The police were informed and Akingboye was arrested.

The three counts against the defendant read in part, “That you, Ijeoma Akingboye, and others now at large, sometime in January 2021 at about 1000 hrs at Association Plaza, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony, to wit: obtaining money under false pretences and stealing.

“That you, Ijeoma Akingboye, and others now at large, on the same date, time and place, at the aforementioned magisterial district, did with intent to defraud obtain the sum of N11,050,000 from Tony lloabuchi under the pretence of selling two plots of land, a representation you knew to be false.”

The offences are punishable under sections 411, 314(a)(b), and 287(a)(c) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.

He was granted bail in the sum of N1m with two sureties in like sum.

Magistrate Owolabi adjourned the matter, noting that trial would start between January 9 and 11, 2023.
