President Muhammadu Buhari, security chiefs and members of the National Assembly have been urged to urgently find ways that would facilitate arrest of killers of the 43 farmers in Borno State.

The call, which came yesterday from the leadership of the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), also demanded that the authorities should go extra legitimate mile in ensuring that the perpetrators and their sponsors face the wrath of the law.

A statement jointly signed by the Vice President Zone E, Dorcas Philemon and the Zonal Secretary, Tani Akas and made available to journalists in Jalingo, Taraba State, described the gruesome murder of the farmers as “rude shock” to the union and the country.

Condemning the act, the women journalists expressed worry that, if the perpetrators of such heinous crime were not brought to justice, farmers would stay away from their farms and hunger would take centre stage in the country.

The statement read in part: “We call on government and security agents to ensure that the killers of Borno rice farmers are arrested and prosecuted, so as to give other farmers in the country a sense of security to continue to feed the nation…”

The association, which has joined the league of persons and groups decrying the escalation of terrorist attacks in the Northeast, charged security operatives and all tiers of government not to go to bed, until the present security situation in the region and the nation is brought under control.

It noted that the increase in the loss of lives and destruction of property in the region, due to insecurity, was alarming and must be tackled headlong by government and all stakeholders.
