A Professor of Public Law in the Faculty of Law, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile- Ife, Amos Idowu, has urged the National Judicial Council (NJC) not to spare any judge or lawyer who acts against the ethics of the profession.

The don also charged lawyers to always have it at the back of their minds that nobody is above the law. He asked them to always be law-abiding in their conducts.

Idowu spoke yesterday at the public presentation/book launching of the book titled: “Africa: A Continent Between the Cruxes of Freedom and Responsibility” in Osogbo, capital of Osun State.

According to him: “The National Judicial Council has jurisdiction over discipline of all lawyers in Nigeria and over all judges whatever may be the intervention of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA). The lawyers are not above the law, if they acted against the law, they would be disciplined.”

The author of the book, Bolarinwa Olabode, said the current system in Africa was not planned to work and thus responsible for the stunted growth the continent is experiencing.

“The current African system which was not planned to work is a key factor for the stunted growth and redundancy of this continent.

“With 1.3 billion people as of 2018, Africa accounts for about 16% of the world’s population. The population and landmass are not the only advantages; the continent is full of mineral resources in cobalt, coal, gold, petroleum products, and cash crops.

“It is also rich in culture, tribe, and religion. They are people of ingenuity and diversity. Indeed, if any continent is leading the universe, Africa should not be competing with any of the rest continents. Africa should be at the forefront. Alas, there lies distortion everywhere you turn in the continent. Things fall apart; the center cannot hold, like the book of the late Chinua Achebe.”
