ThE Lagos State Government has urged artisans and developers in the state to prioritise safety at building construction sites.
The Director-General of Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr Lanre Mojola, who was represented by the Technical Adviser of the commission, Mr Seun Awojobi, said this on Tuesday at a workshop in Alausa, Ikeja.
The two-day training was organised by the LSC in conjunction with Oloko Adenle and Sowemimo Legal Practitioners, as well as the Association of Real Estate Developers of Lagos State.
Mojola said, “The real estate sector has been plagued with many mishaps recently, ranging from building collapse, to loss of lives and properties amongst many other things, hence the need for today’s forum to enlighten us on steps to take in ensuring the safety of all stakeholders.
“Safety is important, particularly in the construction sector which is very high risk due to working at heights, falling objects, lifting of heavy equipment, even to the point of underage working.
“These are things that matter to us at LSC and we understand that our role entails continuous sensitisation for workers, builders, developers and engineers to understand the importance of safety at construction sites.”
The General Secretary, ARED, Lagos State, Mr Olumegbon Olawale, explained that the training was important for stakeholders, saying it would help prevent hazards on the job.
“This stakeholders’ training will go a long way in assisting our workers because, while accidents can happen everywhere, we have a bulk of it in the construction sector.
“We all need to take safety precautions and the first step is, we need to be enlightened; we need requisite knowledge of those possible ways we can expose ourselves to hazards and prevent them,” he said.
