Fire razes electronic phone shop, destroys property at Ikeja Computer Village

An early morning fire yesterday gutted an office complex of Spectrum Phones Limited at the popular Computer Village Ikeja, Lagos and destroyed property worth millions of Naira.

Sources said the fire started at about 3:00 a.m. at the shopping complex located at 18, Otigba Street, Ikeja.

According to a source, the company was saved from total destruction by the quick intervention of the Lagos State Fire Service, men of the Nigeria Police Force and other emergency responders. The source said: “ As soon as the Fire Fighters were contacted, they arrived immediately. Policemen were also drafted there to protect the Firefighters and prevent hoodlums from gaining access to the complex. “The fire was eventually put out successfully and no life was lost in the incident. However, goods estimated at several millions of Naira were destroyed.”

Confirming the incident, the Human Resources Manager of the firm, Adetunji Richard told The Guardian that police and firemen responded in time and prevented the whole complex from being burnt down. He said: “I got a call around 5:00 a.m, but I learnt that the fire started at about 3:00 a.m. We cannot ascertain the cause of the fire as of now, but it started from our bulk office, where we have packaged goods for different states, where we have branches. “Security men told me that it started with a little smoke and then a blast followed. They couldn’t locate the security man attached to the complex on time, I think he was sleeping, but he was woken by an explosion from phones. On whether any goods were recovered, he said: “We got some phones, but we can’t confirm if the ones we salvaged are in good condition until they are tested. I can’t estimate the amount we lost to the fire until we clear everything, but the loss is huge.”
