The Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has said road upgrade and rehabilitation will put an end to perennial flooding in the state.
Sanwo-Olu said this on Monday, during the inauguration of the upgraded and rehabilitated Adeola Hopewell, Idowu Taylor and Afribank/Churchgate streets on Victoria Island.
He said, “Victoria Island used to, and is still, one of the cleanest parts of our city. However, the continuous growth of the area, especially the commercial activities and the population growth, has led to various infrastructural and environmental challenges among which are flooding and its attendant effects.
“As a responsive government, committed to the fulfilment of all our electoral promises, we knew we have to do something necessary to address the issue of incessant flooding and all its consequences in this neighbourhood.
“So, around March last year, this administration awarded the contract of total reconstruction and upgrade of these road networks.”
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Works and Infrastructure, Aramide Adeyoye, said the upgrade of the road networks would enhance motoring and socio-economic activities within the area.
“Prior to their reconstruction, these strategic roads were in deplorable states with a lot of complaints by the business community of the perennial flooding and inadequate capacity experienced on these roads.
“With the rehabilitation and upgrade of these networks of three roads, the challenge of flooding and inadequate capacity will now become a thing of the past and will also translate into improved free flow of traffic and to a much-needed reduction in travel time for the business owners in the area and the motoring public at large,” she said.
