Land sale: Brother killed, police arrest perpetrator

Men of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested a 78-year-old man, Moshood Habibu, for hacking his 94-year-old brother, Salisu Surakatu, to death over alleged failure to share proceeds from sale of family land with him.The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed this on Saturday in a statement.Oyeyemi said the suspect was arrested on Wednesday after the son of the victim, Aminu Tajudeen, reported the incident at the Mowe Divisional headquarters of the command.

The PPRO said Tajudeen told the police that the suspect came to the victim’s house at Kara Ewumi village Mowe, where he macheted him to death over a disagreement on land matter.

Oyeyemi said the Divisional Police Officer, Mowe, CSP Saminu Akintunde, quickly mobilised detectives to the scene where the suspect was promptly arrested.

He stated that the suspect claimed that the victim sold a plot from their family land and didn’t give him his share of the money, noting that he went there that morning to demand his own share which led to a heated argument between them.Oyeyemi said, “Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect went to the deceased’s house armed with a cutlass, and when he got there, the deceased who was visually-impaired didn’t know he came with a cutlass. While the deceased asked him to leave his house, he descended heavily on him and macheted him to death.”

Oyeyemi said that the state Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, had ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to the Homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence

Department, Abeokuta, for further investigation and diligent prosecution.
