Lawyer advocates early sex education for children

An Ilorin-based legal practitioner, Mr Yusuf Lawal, has advocated the need for early sex education for children in the country.

Lawal, who made the call in Ilorin on Saturday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, said sex education would help prevent children from sexual abuse.

According to him, parents must engage their children on sex education and how to relate with the opposite sex from the teenage years.

“Parents must engage their children with early sex discussion to prevent them from falling victim of rape and sex abuse.

“Most parents always think their children are too young to initiate sex discussion. It is a big mistake and a risk not to teach them earlier sex education.

“It is safer to train them earlier than allow them to learn from friends and peers. Teach them how to dress decently, teach them about their body system and when to speak out,” he said.

The legal practitioner, however, advised parents to act responsibly and spare time with their children.
