A Lagos resident, David Adeyemi, has been jailed for assaulting a worker of the Eko Electricity Distribution Company while discharging his duty in the Apapa area of the state. The spokesperson for the power distribution company, Godwin Idemudia, in a statement on Monday, said Adeyemi was arraigned before the Tinubu Magistrate’s Court.
He stated that Adeyemi, who illegally connected power to his apartment on Makanjuola Street in Apapa, assaulted the worker for disconnecting power supply in his apartment
Idemudia said the Magistrate, T.N. Idowu, found Adeyemi guilty on two counts bordering on assault, adding that he was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment. The statement read, “One David Adeyemi has bagged a six-month jail term after he was arraigned before a Tinubu Magistrate’s Court on two counts of assault on a worker of the Eko Electricity Distribution Company while discharging his official duty.
“It is unbelievable that these acts are still happening in this age and time despite several appeals by the company to customers to make use of all our complaints resolution channels, as well as being civil instead of resorting to self-help. It is rather barbaric to inflict injuries on another person while carrying out his lawful duties.
“The Magistrate, Mrs T.N. Idowu found Adeyemi guilty and sentenced him to six months on both counts to run consecutively. She ordered that Adeyemi be remanded in the Ikoyi facility of the Nigerian Correctional Service.”
Idemudia urged customers to always seek diplomatic means and engagement in settling grievances.
He added that the company frowned at all forms of assault and would go the full extent of the law to ensure all offenders were brought to book.
