Afaraukwu suspends new yam festival The Board of Directors of World Igbo Congress (WIC) has authorised immediate legal support to Nnamdi Kanu’s legal team, while urging Igbo political elite to eschew political gratification and defend the right of Igbo citizens.
In statement yesterday by its Public Relations Officer (PRO), Basil Onwukwe, WIC decried the seeming leadership vacuum in Igboland where armed security agents could kill innocent Igbo youths without facing any consequences.
It also lends support to the peaceful really billed for next Tuesday.
“The World Igbo Congress will be supporting a global peaceful protest rally in all the capital cities on August 31, 2021, against the extra-judicial killings in Nigeria and the illegal abduction of Nnamdi Kanu from Kenya.
“The happenings in Igboland concerning the sit-at-home order has shown that coercive governance has no place in Igboland, and that what we are witnessing now may deteriorate unless inclusive governance is restored in our body politics,” it stated.
It described government’s disruption of peaceful demonstrations – a universal means of demanding a change in unpopular government policy – as unacceptable.
Calling on the Federal Government to apply proper governing tools that will heal the country and refrain from activities that aggravate the agitation for disintegration, the group added: “The Federal Government of Nigeria has not shown any desire to improve the governance of the nation, but has doubled down to increase the state of uncertainty in the polity.
“Ndigbo are tired of a nation that has no desire for improvement. The electoral infrastructure obituary was announced when electronic result capturing was rejected by the political elite.”
According to WIC, the nation’s financial infrastructural development management has turned to China’s Communist Party, which makes anyone wonder what is remaining in the structure called Nigeria.
Onwukwe called on Igbo leaders to determine a workable strategy to navigate the shame the Federal Government brought to them in the arrest of Kanu and the continuous intolerance of the Buhari administration.
IN the same vein, Afaraukwu Kingdom in Umuahia North Local council of Abia State, Kanu’s hometown, has announced the suspension of its 2021 new yam festival, saying that it cannot be celebrating while its son languishes in detention.
Afaraukwu Development Union (ADU) stated, yesterday, that the people suspended the festival to express their concern over the plight of their detained prince.
“We seek that our son be given fair hearing in a court of competent jurisdiction, based on national and international laws,” ADU stated.
The release, jointly signed by chiefs and traditional rulers of the kingdom, called on the Abia state government and Security Agencies to help maintain peace and order in their community.
The signatories, including Levi Ogbonna, John Nwagwu, Eddy Okwulaga and Pik Ukaegbu, appealed to Afaraukwu people, in particular, to bear the sacrifice in appreciation of a more peaceful society.
