Flood: Buni charges traditional rulers to enlighten subjects on dangers of waterways blockage

Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni has charged traditional rulers in the state to enlighten their communities on the need to keep the waterways free from blockage.

Buni, in a statement signed by his spokesman, Mamman Mohammed, on Wednesday visited the emirs of Damaturu, Fika and Potiskum to sympathise with them over the recent floods recorded in some communities in the emirates.

He assured the monarchs that the government would work towards providing permanent solutions to the floods in their communities.

“Government will consider building massive water ways, drainages and channels to divert the flow of the rain water from residential buildings”, he said.

The governor, however, noted that some of the floods were preventable once structures were built on water ways, while charging the royal fathers to enlighten their communities on the need to keep the waterways free from blockage.

Governor Buni assured that, “the government will support victims of the floods to cushion their hardships”.

The Emir of Damaturu, Alh Baba Shehu Hashimi Ibn El-kanemi; Alh. Muhammadu Abbali ibn Muhammadu Idrisa, Emir of Fika; and Alh. Umaru Bubaram Ibn Wuriwa Bauya, Emir of Potiskum, in their separate remarks, commended the state government for the quick response in supporting victims of flood in their respective Emirate councils.

They commended the State Emergency Management Agency for providing emergency relief materials to the victims in good time, informing the governor that SEMA had acted on his directive promptly, reaching out to the flood victims.
