Foundation decries Nigeria’s slow justice system, fetes over 1000 inmates

Shamies Unusual Hearts Foundation has lamented the flaws in Nigeria’s criminal justice system, saying proceedings often going on for years without conclusion was responsible for prison congestion.

Founder and executive director of the foundation, Mrs. Sara Abdul, stated this during a visit to the Kuje correctional centre, Abuja where the foundation fed and donated items, including medical equipment to over 1000 inmates.

A report by the Nigerian Correctional Service last year said at least 70 per cent of Nigeria’s total prison population are inmates serving time without being sentenced.

Abdul stated that a situation where at least 70 per cent of the inmates were awaiting trial revealed a broken justice system.

“Nigeria justice system is broken. The Federal government should do something about it because there are many cases that should not be kept here. If the country justice should be the way it should be,we should not have issue of congestion in the Correctional centers,” Abdul said.

Among the items donated to the inmates were over 100 mattresses, medical equipment edible items, including musical and comedy entertainment.

Abdul said the gesture was to provide succour for inmates by pulling together A-list music artists and comedians to entertain them, and also meet some of their basic needs of life.

“Doing this give hope to inmates. There is a lot of they have been locked for long and they don’t have a taste of freedom to entertainment and the rest,” Abdul said.

“I feel like this is one of many projects we have line up and I hope that this will elevate a lot of depression which is part of what am fighting for.”
