The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission says some fraudsters have been impersonating its officials and executing search warrants on properties belonging to prominent Nigerians. The EFCC said in a Facebook post on Wednesday that some of the impersonators had used fake search warrants to search the homes of top lawmakers in the country.
The commission said, “It has come to the knowledge of the EFCC that some unscrupulous individuals parading themselves as operatives of the commission have been harassing some prominent persons in the country on the pretext of purportedly executing search warrants on behalf of the commission.
“Among their victims are politically-exposed persons including ranking lawmakers.”
The anti-graft agency said the development was frightening as it represented a new dimension to the nefarious business of impersonation of the EFCC officials by fraudsters and other criminal gangs.
While dissociating itself from the activities of the criminals, the anti-graft agency advised members of the public to be circumspect when confronted with requests from suspicious persons to search their homes or properties.
The EFCC added, “Accordingly, members of the public are implored to verify the authenticity of any demand for the execution of search warrants by referring such to the nearest office of the EFCC. They can also contact the head office through these numbers: 08093322644 or 08183322644.”
