CPC arrests three, seizes truck-load of fake electricals in Rivers State
Three persons have been arrested by the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) for selling fake electrical products to consumers in Rivers State.

The suspects were arrested yesterday at Okija Lane, a popular electrical market in Port Harcourt City Council.

Also, a truck-load of substandard electrical products were seized, while two shops selling the products were sealed when the owners locked them and ran away.

Head of CPC, South South Zone, Johnson Uche, said that fake electrical products cause fire outbreak, vowing that CPC would sustain the move until unwholesome electrical products disappear from the market.

Uche disclosed that when the council was tipped off about the fake products, it monitored it, went for first and second surveillance before finally arresting the dealers yesterday.

According to him, the suspects would be prosecuted after proper investigations.

He said: “Nigeria’s cable is the best in the world, and because of the high demand, people resorted to producing fake ones, thereby making it difficult for those producing genuine ones to remain in the market.

“When those who manufacture genuine products cannot sell again, it may create unemployment or total shutdown of the firm or force them to join in producing counterfeit wires and cables, which is not safe.”

The Guardian observed that the fake electrical products have no address and clear label. The seized products include Nigerchin Wire and Cable among others.

Administrative manager of Nigerchin Electrical Development Limited, Gerald Duruemeruo, lamented that the activities of counterfeiters brought severe economic consequences on the firm.

He said: “We can no longer sell our products, and this is causing a lot of damages to us. It is important to cleanse the market from fake products, so that the society can be safe and those doing genuine business can thrive.”
