A boat operator, Solomon Olugbenga, was on Monday arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court for allegedly failing to provide his passengers with life jackets.

The 19-year-old operator was arraigned on one count of endangering the lives of commuters.Newsmen learnt that Olugbenga had on March 28 around 9am allegedly endangered his passengers at the National Inland Waterways Authority, Marina, Lagos, while ferrying them across the waterways without life jackets.

According to the police prosecutor, Godspower Ehizoba, the offence contravened Section 255 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Magistrate, Mrs F. O. Sasanya, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

She added that the sureties must be gainfully employed and one of them must be a blood relation of the defendant.

The case was adjourned till May 13 for trial.

In another development, a 29-year-old man, Qudus Akinwale, was arraigned before the Igbosere Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing underwear and other clothing items worth N100,000, belonging to his friend’s neighbours.

Akinwale was arraigned on one count of stealing before Magistrate O. O. Adeshina.Newsmen learnt that Akinwale had on April 22 around 11.50am on Adeniji Adele Road, Lagos Island, entered the premises on the pretext that he wanted to visit a friend who lived downstairs.

It was gathered that he went to the back of the building, took some of the clothes on the line before sneaking into an apartment for more clothes.

According to the prosecutor, Friday Mameh, the occupant of the apartment walked in as the defendant was trying out her husband’s shirt and raised the alarm.

Akinwale allegedly ran upstairs where he was caught by other occupants of the building.

Mameh told the court that some of the clothes belonged to the complainant, Mrs Rebecca Ajala.

He said, “The complainant, who was sleeping in her apartment, was awakened by the shouts of her neighbours as they pursued the defendant. She came out and found out that the defendant had taken her clothes from the line.”

The offence, the prosecutor alleged, contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Adeshina admitted him to bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till May 15 for trial.
