Lagos State Building Control Agency has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that building construction activities across the state conform strictly to approved building plans, standards, specifications, and applicable building regulations.
The General Manager of LASBCA, Gbaye Florence, stated this recently in Lagos when she received the Executive Members of the Property and Environment Writers Association of Nigeria on a courtesy visit to the agency’s headquarters in Ikeja, Lagos.
The Director of Public Affairs at LASBCA, Adu Ademuyiwa, in a recent statement, explained that the visit was primarily to congratulate the General Manager on her appointment and to explore areas of collaboration and partnership between PEWAN and LASBCA ahead of the Association’s forthcoming 2026 Annual Conference, scheduled to be held in October.
Welcoming the delegation, the General Manager expressed appreciation to PEWAN for the visit and commended the Association for its consistent and professional reportage of developments within the built environment sector in Lagos State.
She noted that the role of the media in promoting public awareness and supporting government policies and programmes could not be overemphasised, stressing that the government could not achieve its objectives alone without the support and cooperation of relevant stakeholders.
Gbaye reaffirmed LASBCA’s “commitment to ensuring that building construction activities across the State conform strictly to approved building plans, standards, specifications, and applicable building regulations.”
She emphasised the agency’s determination to strengthen compliance and promote a safer, more resilient and sustainable built environment for all Lagosians.
Gbaye also called on PEWAN to support the agency in creating greater awareness about the recently launched Lagos State Building Insurance Scheme, “which encourages property owners and developers, including owners of existing and ongoing construction projects, to obtain Non-Liability Insurance Policies.”
She explained that the initiative is designed to provide an additional layer of protection and help mitigate the financial burden associated with unforeseen contingencies involving buildings.
She further urged members of PEWAN to intensify public enlightenment on the state government’s ongoing digital transformation agenda in physical planning and building control processes, particularly through the recently launched Electronic Physical Planning Permit System.
According to her, the EPPPS provides property owners and developers with a more seamless and convenient means of applying for building-related permits and approvals electronically, thereby reducing physical bottlenecks and improving efficiency in the development approval process.
Gbaye reiterated LASBCA’s readiness to collaborate with PEWAN in its forthcoming Annual Conference, noting that such partnerships would further strengthen synergy among professionals and stakeholders in the built environment while creating a platform to deepen public understanding of LASBCA’s statutory responsibilities.
“Institutional bodies should be part of what LASBCA does as an Agency, as their wealth of experience and expertise will go a long way in bringing sanity to the built environment through conformity advocacy. This was why the Lagos State Government launched the Certified Accreditors’ Programme, a Public-Private Partnership,” she said.
Earlier, the Chairman of PEWAN, Mrs Okwy Iroegbue, congratulated Gbaye Florence on her appointment and commended LASBCA for its efforts towards ensuring that buildings across Lagos State are constructed in accordance with approved standards, thereby promoting safer, more secure and habitable communities and reducing the risk of building collapse.
Iroegbue explained that PEWAN is the umbrella body of journalists reporting on property, housing, urban development, construction and environmental matters across Nigeria.
She disclosed that, over the last two years, members of the association had published more than 400 stories covering critical issues such as building collapse, climate resilience, housing deficit, green construction and urban regeneration.
“We do not just report problems; we also report solutions, innovations and the people getting it right,” she stated.
She also expressed the Association’s readiness to sustain a cordial and mutually beneficial relationship with LASBCA.
