“Court order ignored”
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Kano Branch, has condemned the Kano State Police Command for allegedly failing to comply with a court order directing the release of a detained lawyer, Ahmad Tijjani Miko.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the branch chairman, Usman Umar Fari, described the reported action as a serious violation of the rule of law and a challenge to the authority of the judiciary.
Fari said the Kano State High Court had ordered the immediate release of Miko in a case filed against the Commissioner of Police and three others. He alleged that although the order was duly served on the police commissioner, the lawyer has remained in detention for seven days without being charged to court.
He expressed concern over the development, stressing that security agencies are meant to uphold the law, not disregard it. According to him, such conduct threatens the foundation of civil society.
“When those who are paid by taxpayers to enforce the law become the frontline violators of the law, the fabric of civil society is fundamentally threatened,” he said. He added that ignoring court orders is not only a violation of fundamental rights but also an attack on the judiciary and a risk to public order.
The NBA chairman further warned that respect for court rulings is essential to any democratic system, noting that public trust in the justice system could be weakened if law enforcement agencies fail to comply with judicial decisions.
He also emphasized that the police must always operate within constitutional boundaries and uphold the rule of law.
The NBA Kano Branch therefore demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Ahmad Tijjani Miko in line with the court’s directive.
