*Tragedy Averted as Police Rescue Man Who Jumped Into Lagos Lagoon Over
The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the rescue of a 33-year-old man, known as Olu, who attempted to take his own life by jumping into the lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge on Tuesday.
Reports indicate that the man drove his silver Lexus SUV to the Yaba section of the bridge, parked, and then jumped into the water. He was said to have traveled from Ibadan, Oyo State, earlier that day, allegedly struggling with severe financial losses linked to cryptocurrency investments.
He was quickly noticed after falling into the lagoon, prompting an immediate rescue response. The Divisional Police Officer in charge of Yaba, CSP Adegbemi Isiaka, mobilized a local fisherman who helped pull him out of the water. He was then rushed to a hospital for urgent treatment.
A source revealed that Olu is the first of two children, with his parents living separately in the United Kingdom and Ibadan. The source added that he had driven from Ibadan specifically with the intention of ending his life due to his financial distress, but was fortunately rescued in time.
The police spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed that he has since been discharged from the hospital and handed over to his family members, who traveled to Lagos after being informed of the incident. The family has reportedly arranged to take him to a rehabilitation facility for further care, and he was cautioned that attempted suicide is a criminal offence.
The incident gained attention after a viral video shared by businessman Isaac Fayose called for people to check on loved ones, highlighting the emotional struggles that may have contributed to the event. Eyewitnesses also recounted how he left his phones in his car before jumping into the lagoon, before being rescued by a fisherman and emergency responders.
