Olukoyede pledges to defeat corruption

The Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA Resource Centre) has commended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for securing the conviction of former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Nwabuoku, describing the development as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing fight against corruption.

In a statement signed by HEDA’s Chairman, Olanrewaju Suraju, the organisation lauded the anti-graft agency for its persistence in prosecuting high-profile corruption cases, noting that the conviction sends a strong message that no public official is above the law.

It further exposed the culpability of civil servants in politicians’ corruption.

According to Suraju, the successful prosecution of Nwabuoku reinforces public confidence in Nigeria’s justice system and underscores the importance of sustained institutional commitment to accountability and transparency in public finance management.

The judiciary, he said, also received commendation for complementing the efforts of the EFCC in ensuring the timely conclusion of the case.

The group, however, called on the EFCC to intensify efforts to expedite the prosecution of former Accountant-General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris, whose case remains a critical test of the country’s anti-corruption resolve. It stressed that delaying justice in such high-profile cases undermines public trust and weakens the deterrent effect of anti-corruption enforcement.

Suraju said: “The allegations against Ahmed Idris involve massive public fund misappropriation, and ensuring a timely and transparent trial is essential to demonstrate that the anti-corruption war is not selective.”

The organisation further urged the judiciary to prioritise corruption-related cases, particularly those involving senior public officials, to avoid unnecessary delays that could compromise justice.

HEDA therefore reaffirmed its commitment to supporting anti-corruption agencies and advocating for accountability, transparency, and good governance in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the Executive Chairman of EFCC, Mr Ola Olukoyede, has felicitated Christians nationwide on the celebration of Easter, expressing hope that Nigeria will break the yokes of corruption, saying: “We are not defined by corruption; we cannot be defeated by it.”

The EFCC’s boss charged Nigerians to imbibe the lesson of Easter, which pertains to victory over trial, corruption, and death, stressing that it is instructive for us as a nation.

He further charged Nigerians to keep hope alive and continue to have faith in the EFCC in its relentless war against economic and financial crimes and other acts of corruption.
