The Lagos State Government has launched a free pre-marriage counselling course for religious marriage counsellors as part of efforts to combat domestic and gender-based violence in the state.
The government disclosed this in a statement on the Lagos State Government Facebook page on Monday.
According to the statement, the course initiated by the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency will be facilitated by experienced professionals.
The statement read, “The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has launched a Religious Pre-Marital Counselling Course, a free online training designed for religious marriage counsellors.
“The course is facilitated by experienced professionals: Praise Fowowe, Emmanuel Temilade Oladele, Adekunle Omotayo Saheed, and Folashade Ajayi, who bring extensive expertise in family life, counselling, marriage education, and relationship development.”
It added that participants would be trained on practical tools necessary for building healthy marriages.
“Through this course, religious marriage counsellors will gain practical tools on building healthy marriages, strengthening communication, managing conflict, recognising early warning signs of abuse, and preventing sexual and gender-based violence.
“The course is completely free and can be taken online at your convenience,” the statement added.Reported in 2024 that the Executive Secretary of the agency, Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, said the agency handles an average of 300 domestic violence cases on a monthly basis.
She had also noted that no fewer than 6,333 survivors were assisted in the last 10 years.
