Former President of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICoN) and current Administrator of the National Judicial Institute (NJI), Hon Justice Babatunde Adejumo, on Thursday formally inaugurated the maiden edition of the Institute’s Cup.

The competition, named Hon Justice Babatunde Adejumo Cup in his honour as the Grand Patron, is the first of its kind within Nigeria’s judicial system.

The inter-departmental sporting competition is aimed at promoting unity, wellness and institutional bonding, while also fostering healthy competition, strengthening community spirit and showcasing the athletic potential of staff of the Institute.

Declaring the games open at the NJI Complex in Abuja, Justice Adejumo expressed pride in the initiative, describing it as a unique blend of sports, teamwork and institutional cohesion within the judicial environment.

He commended members of staff participating as athletes, noting that the tournament provides a rare and commendable platform that promotes physical fitness, healthy rivalry and unity across departments, age groups and skill levels within the Institute.

Justice Adejumo also praised the NJI Sports Club for its consistency and impact, describing it as a formidable force within the judiciary.

He specifically lauded the Team Manager, Mr Suleiman Musa Suleiman, and members of the executive committee for their dedication and effective leadership.

According to him, the inter-departmental games are the result of months of careful planning and a shared vision to foster inclusivity, wellness and camaraderie among staff.

He stressed that the initiative should transcend sports and evolve into a lasting festival of unity and health awareness at the Institute.

The NJI Administrator urged athletes to uphold the spirit of fair play, show humility in victory and grace in defeat, and serve as sources of inspiration through discipline, passion and teamwork.

He stated that the Institute’s management will continue to prioritise sports development, announcing the full refurbishment of the NJI Sports Club House, the addition of a new sit-out area, and the construction of a modern multipurpose court with floodlights for lawn tennis, basketball, handball and other sporting activities.

Justice Adejumo further revealed plans to re-equip the gymnasium and upgrade other sports facilities, charging members of the Sports Club to fully utilise the improved infrastructure and bring greater laurels to the Institute.
