Lagos Controller advocates new strategy to reform inmates, Kirikiri gets ICT centre

The Controller of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS), Lagos Command, Daramola George, has called for modern corrections with purpose and direction aimed at rehabilitating offenders in the nation’s correctional centres.

He made the call yesterday at the opening ceremony of the Anchor Heritage Initiative ICT extension hub at the Kirikiri Medium Correctional Centre in Lagos State.

The extended centre is equipped with 10 desktop computers, four chess boards, books, tables and chairs, and air conditioners to complement the existing facility, which already has 33 desktop computers and laptops for inmate training.

George said: “Today is not just about opening a facility. It is about opening minds and restoring dignity. Anchor Heritage Initiative has proven to be more than just an organisation; it is a bridge between confinement and opportunity. Through computer training, provision of ICT equipment and continuous engagement, they have helped our inmates gain skills that will remain with them long after their sentences are over.

“The commitment to rehabilitation aligns perfectly with the mandate of the Nigerian Correctional Service, which includes reforming, rehabilitating and reintegrating offenders. What is done here is not charity; it is nation-building. The extension of this ICT hub will empower more inmates with digital knowledge that will change their stories.”

Speaking at the programme, the Chief Executive Officer of Anchor Heritage, Ololade Oladipupo, said: “What began then as a bold step toward innovation and digital empowerment has now grown into something even greater. This expansion is a testament to progress, perseverance and the belief that when a vision is rooted in purpose, it continues to grow beyond its beginnings.
