Agency seeks justice for Anambra woman killed by husband

Anambra State Government, through the Ministry of Women and Social Welfare, has waded into the case of the alleged murder of one Ogechukwu Okafor, allegedly macheted to death by her husband, Elijah Emeka Ibeabuchi, a pastor.

The incident, which happened on August 13, was reported to the ministry by the deceased’s family following irregularities and threats by the alleged husband.
Narrating the incident, Mr Samuel Onuorah, from Abatete, uncle to the late Ogechukwu, alleged that he got a call from her late niece’s husband that her niece, Ogechukwu, fell from a four-storey building and died.

The deceased’s husband hails from Nimo in Njikoka Local Council of the state. Seeking justice at the office of the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mr Onuorah noted that they discovered that their daughter did not fall but was instead allegedly killed with a knife, stabbed in her neck and chest by Ibeabuchi.

He revealed that their doubts were cleared after they went to the mortuary where the said husband had deposited their daughter’s corpse and saw evidently that she didn’t fall from any building.

The family of the deceased also alleged that Ibeabuchi intended to use their newborn baby for ritual purposes. They urged the state government to come to their rescue and give justice to their deceased daughter.

In response, Ify Obinabo, the Commissioner of Women Affairs, urged stakeholders, women’s groups, human rights activists, and social media users to support the government in ensuring that Ogechukwu receives justice.

She called on everyone to speak out about the matter and assured that she would inform the governor’s wife, who she believes will personally take up the case and ensure justice for the deceased.
