The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office has sealed off a property in Lekki over illegal and unregulated borehole drilling activities.

The agency said the affected property, Kelly Court, located in NICON Town, was shut following complaints of environmental violations linked to improper wastewater handling.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed the development in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday.

According to the statement, the borehole drilling was being carried out on the setback of a public drainage system by an unlicensed operator, leading to environmental degradation and damage to public infrastructure.

It added that the activity resulted in the discharge of untreated wastewater, posing risks to residents and the surrounding environment.

“The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office sealed off Kelly Court, NICON Town, Lekki, and stopped work of the borehole drilling machine after complaints of improper and unregulated borehole drilling activities… by an unlicensed driller causing degradation of the environment, the public road and infrastructures with untreated wastewater,” the statement read.

The agency described the act as a violation of the state’s environmental laws and regulations.

It warned that such infractions would not be tolerated, stressing that offenders risk sanctions and possible prosecution.

The state government also urged residents to comply with proper wastewater and environmental management practices to safeguard public health and infrastructure.

It reiterated its commitment to enforcing environmental standards across the state as part of efforts to maintain a cleaner and safer environment.
